The White Mountain Apache Tribe

 

The White Mountain Apache tribe is home to the historic Fort Apache and is located in east central Arizona. Consisting of 1.67 million acres (2600 square miles), it ranges in elevation from 2600 feet to 11,400 feet. This reservation has some of the richest wildlife habitats in the state and more than 400 miles of streams.

 

There are 15,000 registered tribal members with many living on the reservation. These people face problems of suicide (3 times the national average), gang violence, drug and alcohol abuse and teen pregnancies. Of 287 births in 2003, 199 were to unwed mothers.

 

The average age at death for any Native American residing within the borders of Arizona is 54.7 years.

 

Apache, an Athabaskan language of the American Southwest, is spoken in many homes. It is a written language and is taught to the children by their elders.
